What we need from YOU!
- Video footage of Winnipeg (and surrounding area) from any time of year -- landscapes, you and your family doing something uniquely Winnipegian, etc. If it's outdoors and sunny (any season), even better!
- Video of you singing along with the choruses (in selfie mode or landscape). Have fun with this! Outside, inside... IT'S THE SUN! ps you don't need to be a Winnipegger or in Winnipeg to do this... :)
- Video footage of the references in the lyrics. ie "It's the snowplows at night", if you can go out & capture this (safely!), or already have footage of the snowplows in action at night, we’d love to have that! Other examples: "It's the Socials at the hall" -- "It’s the Sunday night cruise down Portage Avenue” -- "It's the Jets' winning goal" -- "It’s mosquitoes and canoes"...
Video specs:
- Try to shoot new footage in landscape (horizontal) but we will accept older footage that is in portrait (vertical)
- When recording yourself singing the choruses, make sure you are in a well-lit area
Upload all footage to Google Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer, etc, and share it/send it to TSGwinnipeg@gmail.com
*Deadline to submit video is March 12, 2021. Everyone who submits will be entered to win a merchandise bundle from The Small Glories!
And here are the lyrics...
"Winnipeg" - Cara Luft, JD Edwards & Andrina Turenne (SOCAN)
In the heart of the Continent
An ancient rhythm flows through the land
Carved the trails that led me here
All the songs that called us out
Old traditions, word of mouth
Heard it calling from the East to the West
Took my roots on the old highway
Travelled for about two or three days
Wrote a song with a new sound
Look at me now, I’m Winnipeg bound!
It’s the socials at the hall,
Watching Bombers playing ball
It’s the Sunday night cruise
Down Portage Avenue
It’s the Northern Lights
It’s the snowplows at night
It’s your parka and your toque
It’s the way you wear your boots
And it’s the sun!
It’s the sun!
It’s the rivers of life
From the north end of town
It’s the gathering place,
This is Treaty One ground
It’s remembering Riel,
It’s that tasty Crown Royal
It’s the Gateway to the West,
It’s Métis, English and French
And it’s the sun!
Le soleil qui brille à l'horizon
Qui nous prend par la main quand l'hiver est long
It’s the sun!
Le soleil et toute sa lumière
Tous les mois de l'année dans un ciel ouvert
Une terre qui nourrit
On voit les traces de nos ancêtres dans la prairie
It’s Mr. Young and The Guess Who
It’s mosquitoes and canoes
It’s the harvest in the field
It’s another record year
It’s the Jets winning goal
It’s always -35 below
It’s the music and the vibe
Where our spirits come alive
It’s the sun!
It's the sun on the prairie lifting up my soul
I was lost on the land but now I know
It’s the sun!
Le soleil qui brille à l'horizon
Qui nous prend par la main quand l'hiver est long
It’s the sun!
It's the sun on the prairie lifting up my soul
I was lost on the land but now I know
It’s the sun!
Le soleil et toute sa lumière
Tous les mois de l'année dans un ciel ouvert
In the heart of the Continent
An ancient rhythm flows through the land
Carved the trails that led me here
All the songs that called us out
Old traditions, word of mouth
Heard it calling from the East to the West
